Rob has hijacked the studio to discuss Gaspar Noe’s CLIMAX (2018), an avant-garde horror film about a French dance troupe’s hellish acid trip, starring Sophia Boutella. It’s an unforgettable film, from the incredible dance number set to Cerrone’s “Supernature” to a child locked in a room screaming for his mommy.

We bring the Hard Day’s series to a close with two meta-narrative movie musicals starring singer-songwriters: ROBERTO CARLOS EM RITMO DE AVENTURA (1968) starring “the King” Roberto Carlos, and Anthony Newley’s CAN HEIRONYMUS MERKIN EVER FORGET MERCY HUMPPE AND FIND TRUE HAPPINESS (1969).

We are joined by guest Tony Bevilacqua, guitarist for The Distillers, for BEATLE MOVIE MANIA PART TWO as we discuss HELP! (1965), directed by Richard Lester, the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR television special (1967) written and directed by the Beatles themselves, and the animated YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968).

This week is a tale of contrasts as we talk about the musical party that is THE GHOST GOES GEAR (1966), featuring The Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood, before traveling back to the States for William Friedkin’s first feature film, GOOD TIMES (1967), starring Sonny & Cher.

We’re joined by Justin Beahm to look at projects fronted by “manufactured” bands, including the ground-breaking sitcom THE MONKEES (1966), Saturday morning cartoon THE ARCHIES (1968), as well as the Monkees’s feature film HEAD (1968), directed by Bob Rafelson and written by Rafelson & Jack Nicholson.

It’s time for Hollywood studios to invade the British Invasion with two sitcom-esque American films starring Herman’s Hermits: HOLD ON! (1966) and MRS. BROWN, YOU’VE GOT A LOVELY DAUGHTER (1968).

We look at a pair of 1965 films about Swinging Sixties youth that use British rock-n-roll stars in more traditional movie musicals. EVERY DAY’S A HOLIDAY stars John Leyton and Freddie & the Dreamers, while THREE HATS FOR LISA features Joe Brown and songs by Leslie Bricusse.

Chris and Rob dive into the charms of FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY (1964), starring Liverpool’s own Gerry and the Pacemakers. In I’VE GOTTA HORSE (1965), Billy Fury and his love for animals take center stage, prompting Chris and Rob to lose their minds.

We discuss Richard Lester’s blockbuster Beatles comedy musical, A HARD DAY’S NIGHT (1964), and its influence on both cinema and music videos. Then we switch gears to John Boorman’s feature-film debut starring the Dave Clark Five, CATCH US IF YOU CAN (1965), a surprising movie that explores more mature themes of disaffection and estrangement.
